Profile
My interest is the educational, social, and cultural conditions necessary to enable people, regardless of whether they have a disability, to fully participate in society. My research, therefore, focuses on the principles, goals, and methods of education for persons with disabilities, the lives of graduates after leaving school, the involvement of educational and medical professionals, and the relationship with society’s perceptions of disability in Japan since the modern era. Currently, I am conducting research that focuses on the development of the professional foundation of education for the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as the process by which this foundation has been reexamined in the light of changing societal perceptions of disability and the shifting image of being deaf or hard of hearing by themselves. Considering the conditions for the full participation of persons with disabilities is deeply connected to how we perceive ‘disability’. There are two approaches to re-examining our perception of ‘disability’: one is to trace changes in people's perception of ‘disability' throughout history, and the other is to compare and contrast Japan with countries and regions that have different social and cultural conditions. Whilst placing emphasis on the former approach, I also wish to engage in research from the latter perspective—placing the societies and cultures of other countries and regions as a mirror to re-examine our own.
